history of the tŷ cymorth hospice appeal

The Appeal was set up originally by Mrs. Hazel Powell of Carmarthen and a few others in 1992 with a view to having a Hospice with beds for Carmarthen and surrounding district, situated on the Glangwili hospital site. It was registered as a charity in 1993 as “Carmarthen and District Hospice Appeal”. A constitution was drawn up and seven trustees appointed with a fundraising committee of about 20. The contribution of all those involved at that time is gratefully acknowledged here.

The original aim of having a hospice with beds proved unattainable at that time and a decision was taken to have a Day Hospice. The existing Trust owned a building, then called “Crossways” and the Appeal money raised (£200,000), was used to adapt it for use as a Day Hospice and to provide items of furniture etc. The building was officially opened in 2000 and has served as a Day Hospice since then for patients and their families facing a life limiting illness. Recently the Appeal’s name has been changed in consultation with interested parties.

The name “Tŷ Cymorth” was chosen after public consultation and is very appropriate for a place which is a haven for patients with life limiting illness to find help, support, advice and friendship. In 2007 the name was changed in consultation with interested parties and the Charity Commission to the Tŷ Cymorth (Carmarthen and District) Hospice Appeal.

The Carmarthen and District Hospice Committee work in partnership with the Hywel Dda Health Board to enhance the service that is provided in Tŷ Cymorth.

After 20 years of fundraising by the Tŷ Cymorth (Carmarthen and District) Hospice Appeal, and in partnership with the Hywel Dda University Health Board, the new Tŷ Cymorth was opened in June 2014 by the Welsh Government Health Minister, Professor Mark Drakeford.

Thanks must go to the people of Carmarthen and District for their loyal support over more than twenty years. Your generosity has made all this possible.

Tŷ Cymorth is patient-centred. A team of therapists, Macmillan nurses, bereavement counsellors, including a new Anticipatory care counsellor (pre-bereavement counselling for children and young people) and spiritual care specialists offer a range of services and continuous support. They provide information and advice for patients and their families through day care and at home.
